LESSON 2 - CONDITIONALS 0 & 1

We use conditional tenses to speculate about possibilities from initial conditions. We use two sentences to make a conditional: a CONDITION and a RESULT.

CONDITION	RESULT
If Jimmy comes,	We play videogames.
If we finish school earlier,	We’ll go to grandma’s house.
When Carol visits us,	She gives me lots of candies.

It does not matter the order of the sentences, the IF / WHEN sentence is the condition clause.

-The animals will die if we don't feed them. -I am sad when you are not here.

CONDITIONAL 0

In CONDITIONAL 0, we speculate about the result of a normal or frequent action.

-When it rains, we don't play sports. - fact. -Flowers don't bloom when it is Winter. -Dogs get sick, if they don't eat dog food. -If I have free time, I read a book.

The tenses in a conditional 0 are:
-If/when + present simple	Present simple
-If Sarah is hungry, she eats her own food. -When Brian is happy, he tells jokes. -I do not take a nap if I have homework to do. -You are in a bad humour when you do not sleep enough.

CONDITIONAL 1

In CONDITIONAL 1, we speculate about a future result, of a possible action in the present.

- If Mary gets home early, we will go to the movies. -You will not pass the exam if you do not study enough. -When I arrive to the school I will talk to Charlie. -We will go to the UK when we finish school.

The tenses in a conditional 1 are:
-If/when + present simple	Future WILL
-If Sarah gets sick, she will not go on the trip. -When Brian tells the news, everyone will be happy. -I will be grounded if I fail the exam. -You will not be happy when I tell you the truth.

EXERCISES

1.Tell what you normally do when these situations happen. Use conditional 0.

Example: -You are alone at home. If I am alone at home, I put on some loud music. -You go to the park but you don’t see your friends. I go to the pizza restaurant when I don’t see my friends in the park.

1-Your fathers sends you to buy some bread. 2-You get a bad grade in an exam. 3-You go to the beach. 4-You must study hard for an exam. 5-You go out with your friends.

2.Conditional 1. Complete the sentences with the right form of the verb. Choose between Present Simple and Future Will.

1-I _____ (send) you a message when a receive the package. 2-If I _____ (go) to grandma’s house, I will tell her hi for you. 3-You _____ (not win) the tournament if you continue to play badly. 4-When we _____ (arrive) to Paris, We will visit the Eiffel Tower. 5- She will not come if you _____ (apologize) to her.
